CASTEL GANDOLFO

 

Castel Gandolfo is located in the region of Lazio and belongs to the province of Rome. The city has over 9000 inhabitants and is located in a scenic location on the Alban lake. The place is located about 24 kilometers southeast of Rome in the Alban Hills. The municipality extends to a height of 519 meters. Castel Gandolfo is divided into four areas. The old town of Castel Gandolfo lies on the edge of the caldera of an extinct volcano. The Alban Lake, which belongs to the municipality, is located on the crater ground, 130 m below the city. Along the shore there are beautiful excursion restaurants and beach baths. On the western slope of the caldera is the district Mole, in the southwest the district Pavona. The city is known for the papal residence here, which served as a summer residence for the popes since the 17th century and has been open to the public since October 21, 2016.
